Big Art Give Away
The British public do not often get something for nothing, but today the Free Art Fair is setting a new trend, where instead of art being sold to the highest bidder they are giving it away for, yes you guessed it, free. Art lovers are drooling at the prospect of owning some of the UK’s best contemporary artwork for absolutely nothing. Would be hopefuls have been queuing up outside of the London Fair, awaiting in anticipation for their name to be called, so that they can select their favourite art piece, some of which by leading connoisseurs Harry Pye, Stella Vine, Matthew Collings and Stuart Cumberland. The event involves more than 50 artists donating their work for the cause.
Founder and artist Jasper Joffe speaks to the BBC and says “We want people to value them because they really like the pieces and not just because they are worth a lot of money, but some of the more valuable pieces will be worth £10-15,000…We want people to think of art not just as what its worth or who buys it, but we want people to think that anyone can be an art collector and that they should really love the piece and want to live with it and not just see it as an investment…By giving it away for free we are saying it is about love and not just money”
In total an estimated £100,000 worth of art is being given away this weekend. And it gets better – even local businesses are donating special giveaways and free samples throughout the week, including snacks from Patisserie Valerie and Sushi from Mara.
